Types of mental health disorders

Diagnoses and their diverse symptoms may sound troubling. However, diagnoses ultimately only exist to help doctors ensure the right type of treatment and to define official social benefits.

Mental health disorders and diagnoses do not define or classify anyone as a person in any way. Getting to know the diagnosis and its symptoms may sometimes make you feel better when you understand that symptoms, which may be difficult to accept even yourself, are part of the disease. And that many other people have encountered the same symptoms.

These pages contain descriptions of the most common mental health disorders and their symptoms as well as information on treatment and recovery. Additional information can also be found in the Current Care Guidelines (in Finnish and in Swedish).
